Drought is the most important limiting factor of the agricultural plants production in Egypt and the world. Nitrogen application management under water limited condition needs to be refined for low yielding environments. Therefore, to see how restricted irrigation and different nitrogen fertilizer affect yield, its components, water use efficiency and nutrients uptake of wheat, an experiment was conducted in a semi-arid area in Assiut, Upper Egypt in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. Split-plot experimental design was used, based on a complete randomized block design with three replications. The variables were two water treatments and three levels nitrogen fertilization. The main plots were used to express irrigation regimes (100% of water requirements (I 100 = 5370 m 3 ha −1 ) and 75% water requirements (I 75 = 4027 m 3 ha −1 )). The split units were assigned for nitrogen fertilizer levels (N 120 =120, N 180 =180, and N 240 =240 kg ha −1 ). The results showed that fertilization o...

On the meadow-chestnut soil of heavy mechanical composition we studied the productivity of promising varieties of winter durum wheat Grain, de-pending on the doses and timing of mineral fertilizers on the background of irrigation and semi-steam systems of soil treatment in irrigation of the flat zone of Dagestan. The purpose of the research was to obtain experimental data for the development of cost-effective and environmentally friendly resource-saving technology of cultivation of promising varieties of winter durum wheat Grain in the flat zone of Dagestan. The novelty of the research is that for the first time in the conditions of irrigation of the flat zone of Dagestan, the optimal doses of mineral fertilizers and the terms of their application for winter durum wheat, providing a significant in-crease in yield and grain quality were studied and established. On average, for 2014-2018 the maximum yield of the promising Grain variety-5.45 t/ha, on aver-age for 2014-2018, wa...

The study aimed to provide valuable information for the promotion of vine by-products in fuelling small-to-medium size enterprises near wine/spirit processing industries. The objective was to evaluate and compare the ashes produced from both fixed and fluidized bed combustion of these wastes and their mixtures. Ashes were characterized by mineralogical, chemical, thermal and fusibility analyses and water leaching tests were conducted to remove problematic elements. Slagging/fouling propensities of ashes were determined, and their environmental impact and potential uses were assessed. The Role of Extracellular Space (Apoplast) in The Regulation of Physiological Processes in Plants

Image
World Journal of Agriculture and Soil Science The paper summarizes the results of studies of the role played by the plant leaf extracellular space in the regulation of mesophyll cells water exchange, photosynthesis and export of assimilates to consuming sink organs. When comparing different methods of assessing water exchange rates, the participation of the plasmalemma in the formation of the leaf water potential was shown. Using the in vivo method of extracting the contents of the apoplast, the dynamics of the exit and movement of labeled photosynthetic products through the extracellular space was traced. It was shown that there is a circulation of assimilates in the plant. As the sugars move downwards along the phloem, they partially escape into the extracellular space and are carried away upwards by the transpiration stream, where they re-enter the leaves that have completed growth and are re-exported. This creates a common pool of photosynthetic products, which serves ...

Cover Cropping in Rainfed Fruticulture

Image
World Journal of Agriculture and Soil Science A significant part of the world’s fruticulture is rainfed managed. Olive, almond and vine are some of the perennial crops whose social and economic importance is huge throughout the Mediterranean basin and which mostly continue to be grown in rainfed conditions. Cover cropping is the most recommended soil management system in fruit growing. However, in rainfed managed orchards, soil tillage continues to dominate, and the use of herbicides is also widely used. In rainfed conditions there is a high risk of competition for water between herbaceous vegetation and trees, which makes difficult the widespread use of cover crops. However, there seem to be new clues to overcoming the problem, consisting of the use of less competitive plants, such as early-maturing self-reseeding annual legumes. These plants are able to protect the soil from erosion, sequester carbon and increase soil organic matter, fix nitrogen and promote the nutritional sta...

Photosynthetic Activity of Fodder Grasses Under Conditions of Drought Stress

Image
World Journal of Agriculture and Soil Science Crop performance is the results of genotypic expression modified by interaction with the environment. One of the environmental factors, that most widely limiting for the crop production is water. The deficit of water significantly limits the growth, development and yielding of crops. The paper presents a mini review of the own research results and the literature on the effect of water shortage on the rate of photosynthesis of forage grasses. A better understanding the physiological reactions of plants to water stress should improving irrigation efficiency, modifying plants for more efficient water use, and developing effective agriculture on dry area. Determining the Climate Change Mitigation Potential of Countryside Stewardship

Image
World Journal of Agriculture and Soil Science Countryside Stewardship (CS) has been England’s principal Agri-environment scheme providing financial incentives for farmers and land managers to look after the environment by undertaking a range of management options such as creating, restoring and improving habitats, reducing water pollution and keeping the character of the countryside. Aside from the benefits for biodiversity and ecosystem services many of the available management options under CS offer opportunities for mitigating the effects of climate change either by reducing greenhouse gas emissions or by increasing carbon sequestration. However, it can be a challenge to quantify the benefits (and burdens in some instances) due to the breadth of the scheme itself and the complexity of the factors involved such as the physical, chemical and biological processes, and spatial and temporal variability due to geographical and climatic factors.
