Tomato Shading Study- Las Vegas 2018 Results Authorized by Angela O Callaghan Cooperative Extension in southern Nevada has been recommending shading tomato plants in the summer to extend the season and help improve production as well as quality. The question remained “Does shading up tomatoes really help in such a harsh desert climate, and if so, how much shade? Do all tomato cultivars benefit equally?” This research aimed to obtain information that could be useful to small growers, including household growers, who must confront the in this region. We selected four commonly grown tomato cultivars: Celebrity, Early girl, Heat Wave and Red Cherry (a very small-fruited variety). The treatments were, 0%, 30% and 50% shade. We transplanted seedlings into raised beds with organically amended soils. The land where the raised beds were located where plants had not grown previously. Major problems included wind damage, sunscald, herbivory and root knot nematodes. To read more...

Tapping Soil Microbiota: Overlooked Underground Players in Agricultural Production Authorized by Yuan Wang Soil, the base for agricultural production, is constantly influenced by a variety of physical, chemical, and biological factors. Despite the abundance and diversity, soil microorganisms have been largely overlooked until recent a few years, due to the untapped functions caused by the difficulties in microbe isolation and culture. Soil microbiota, by definition, is the microbial communities that reside in specific soil niches. With the advances of next-generation sequencing technologies, more and more soil microbiomes from different soil environments were dissected genetically and functionally. These studies suggest that manipulation of soil microbiota may be one of the potential solutions for next-generation agriculture. Oil Mill Wastewater and its Effects Authorized by Serafina Andiloro OMW are characterized by high organic load, concentrations of total suspended solids and phenolic compounds, and depends on the olive’s degree of ripening and the post-harvest, storage conditions, oil and grease. The relationship between soil and OMW is also in dependence of their quantity and qualitative chemical composition. It is noteworthing that the quantity and the quality of OMW is influenced by the olive oil extraction system. In a so called three phases system 50-70 L of lukewarm water are added per 100 kg olive fruits in the horizzontal centrifuge (decanter), whereas 0-20 L of lukewarm water are added per 100 kg olive fruits in a so called two phases system. As a consequence, a three phases system produces larger OMW volumes (93.6-95.0 L per 100 kg olive fruits) than a two phases system (6.1 L per 100 kg olive fruits). The phenolic content in OMW is related to the water added during the oil ext...

Review on The Expected Role of Climate Smart Agriculture on Food System in Ethiopia Authorized by Bikila Tesfa Kebeda This paper reviews various articles, reports and documents on expected role of climate smart agriculture on food system and factors affecting its adoption in Ethiopia. Climate change is global phenomena and is already negatively impacting agricultural production globally and locally. Climate risks to cropping, livestock and fisheries are expected to increase in coming decades, particularly in low-income countries where adaptive capacity is weaker. By 2030, 90% of the world’s major crops, including maize, rice and wheat, will experience reduced or stagnant growth rates as a result of climate change. Climate change is expected to have a greater impact in low-income countries such as Ethiopia because of low numbers of trained people, poor infrastructures and limited economic capability to respond to the challenges. Developing countries such as Ethiopia are l...

Viability of Microorganisms in The Conditions of Permafrost Authorized by Neustroev МP The generally accepted warming of the climate in the Arctic may increase the risk of the emergence and spread of infectious diseases of humans and animals due to the melting of permafrost, the intensive development of natural resources, controlled and uncontrolled paleontological excavations, expansion of vector habitats (insects, rodents), changes in the migration routes of migratory birds. It is very important to know the survival time of microorganisms in the environment for the sanitary-bacteriological assessment of environmental objects, as well as determining the possible period of contamination by their pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microflora in case that they are released by sick animals or bacteria carriers.
